The Green Deal is a government initiative, designed to reduce carbon emissions by improving the efficiency of homes.
In 2011, we were specially selected by the Government to trailblaze their flagship scheme before it is launched across the country following our innovative work on improving the energy efficiency of some of our homes.
The Green Deal is due to go live in October 2012, and we are currently working on some Green Deal pilots, to help us hit the ground running and show other social landlords how it will work when the Green Deal starts.
We plan to use the Green Deal to help to make our homes more energy efficient and to improve comfort of our customers and save them money. We are also wanting to help private homeowners in Central Salford to access Green Deal funding.
How will it work?
The Green Deal eliminates the need to pay upfront for energy efficiency measures and instead provides reassurances that the cost of the measures will be covered by savings on the energy bills. This is known as the ‘Golden Rule’.
A new Energy Company Obligation (ECO) will be part of the Green Deal, allowing subsidies from energy suppliers and Green Deal Finance from the Government to come together into one seamless offer to residents.
ECO funding will help to meet the Green Deal’s ‘Golden Rule’, allowing more expensive energy saving measures to be part funded (such as Solid Wall Insulation), so that the costs are brought in line with energy savings.
We will aim to maximise ECO funding to help increase the energy efficiency of our housing stock.
Keep an eye on our Green News page or follow us on Twitter for updates on how we will make the Green Deal work for our residents.
